After an anxious period, when the future of Edinburgh’s belovèd Tollcross venue was hanging in the balance, Capital Theatres can now announce that the King’s redevelopment can recommence thanks to increased investment from the City of Edinburgh Council and from the Scottish Government.
The respective sums of £3m and £3.85m, on top of the £26.7m already raised and additional fundraising done since January, combine to £7.2m which accounts for the majority of the £8.9m funding gap that emerged last summer due to global conflict, changing trading routes and inflation.
Having these funds in place means that the Board of Capital Theatres, the charity that runs the council-owned King’s Theatre, has the confidence to proceed with the transformational redevelopment, with the remaining shortfall of £1.7m to be raised throughout the life of the project.
The project is vital for the preservation of this belovèd theatre for the local Tollcross community as well as wider Edinburgh and Scotland as a whole, making it a world-class venue that is accessible to all.
