French Film Festival UK Announces Screen Horizons Programme at Summerhall

Edinburgh’s Summerhall is set to host a programme of French and Francophone cinema, including nine contemporary and classic titles some of which are Cannes and César award-winners. The programme exemplifies the diversity of the genre as it spans not just award-winners but new talents, classics and documentaries. With two films screening every Sunday, audiences will have the opportunity to discover some of France’s hottest titles including some which premiered in last year’s French Film Festival UK while others will be accompanied by introductions, Q&As and talks by leading experts from the world of film and French culture.

The programme opens with Éric Besnard’s costume drama, Delicious, set in pre-Revolutionary France and starring Grégory Gadebois and Isabelle Carré combining gastronomy with a taste of revenge.

Filmed in Ukraine, that doubles for Russia before the conflict, and using a mainly locally based crew, is the Scottish Première of Cédric Le Gallo and Maxime Govare’s comedy, The Revenge of the Shiny Shrimps, sequel to Shiny Shrimps, where the rainbow water polo team is stranded in homophobic Russia, marking the start of a crazy adventure.

Screen legend Yves Montand stars in 1970s’ UN Award BAFTA nomination The Confession from Z director Costa-Gavras where Montand is the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs accused of treason. Costa-Gavras also directs the recent Adults in the Room, based on Greek politician Yanis Varoufakis’ memoir and set in the brutal, unforgiving world of finance and politics.

Screen favourite Catherine Frot stars in Pierre Pinaud’s comedy The Rose Maker, where Frot plays a rose grower whose business is on the verge of bankruptcy until her secretary comes up with a plan.

Director of CinéFile Richard Mowe commented “With enthusiastic support from filmgoers, the Screen Horizons season goes from strength to strength, supported by Film Hub Scotland. Among my particular favourites is The Revenge of the Shiny Shrimps which has just opened in France and will receive a Scottish premiere. The newly re-equipped cinema at Summerhall is one of the most welcoming and friendly places to catch up on your movie-going.”

Screen Horizons Programme runs from 24th April – 10th July 2022.
