Tortoise in a Nutshell is an Edinburgh based charity formed in 2010 that creates world class visual theatre for audiences around the globe. Using their unique blend of puppetry, performance and innovation, Tortoise in a Nutshell is at the forefront of visual theatre, delivering poignant and thought-provoking experiences for audiences of all ages. From October, this multi-award-winning company will start their Scottish tour of Concerned Others, a show that premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe festival in 2023.
Using their trademark intimate tabletop performance that comprises immersive soundscapes, shoebox installations, turntables, micro-projection and 32mm figures, Concerned Others, presents the stories of critically underheard voices. These voices reflect Scotland’s unfortunate place as the top of the table of substance-related deaths in Europe and one of the highest rates per head in the world. We will hear accounts that paint us as a nation struggling to recognise a deadly culture of shame, ignorance and misunderstanding surrounding substance dependence and drug-related death.
Intricate miniature worlds place the audience halfway between dream and reality. The piece is a series of first-hand accounts, delving into the hopes and reflections of a community of care givers, healthcare professionals, policy makers and people living with substance dependency.
Concerned Others will tour to five regions throughout October.
