Stills Centre for Photography Opens Scotland’s Only Current Analogue Photobooth

Edinburgh’s Stills Centre for Photography has announced that from 19th October 2024 the first and only analogue photobooth for public use will be opening at the gallery.

Loved back in their heyday by everyone, including big names such as John Lennon and Yoko Ono to John and Jackie Kennedy, and flourishing again in the 21st century in cities like New York, Berlin and London, this endangered cultural artifact will now be available to enjoy in Scotland.  Dating back to 1925, the photobooth holds a rich and vibrant history in both popular culture and film photography today and is a nostalgic and novel way to capture friends, family and colleagues in a cherished set of snaps even in our era of instant digital camera shots.

Development Manager Caitlin Serey said “We envision that introducing an analogue photobooth will further enrich Stills through its historical significance and cultural value, reflecting our aim to support the advancement, enjoyment, exploration and understanding of photography. By bringing a booth to Stills, we will not only revive a vanishing form of photographic expression, but we will actively participate in its preservation, as it will be the only analogue photobooth in all of Scotland, making it a focal point for both regular Stills visitors and new enthusiasts seeking authentic, vintage photography experiences. Importantly, Stills is a registered charity and we also hope the photobooth will provide a new stream of income for Stills, contributing to our long-term organisational resilience”

Look forward to an Amelie moment this Autumn in Cockburn Street with the Stillsautomat, that is made possible with thanks to Project Echo and Stills Centre for Photography is supported by Creative Scotland, City of Edinburgh Council and the William Grant Foundation.
