Ayrshire born but Edinburgh based composer, pianist and vocalist David Paul Jones, known to his pals as DPJ, has announced a new song collection, entitled Lone Tree. The new work comes from selected poems from the extensive back catalogue of Scotland’s current Makar, Kathleen Jamie, along with material from her new book, Cairn, to which Kathleen has given him access.
Lone Tree is a cycle of ten songs scored for voice, piano, violin, cello and electronic soundscape and will premiere as a pair of one-off, intimate live performances specially commissioned by the Edinburgh International Book Festival. Joining DPJ live onstage are Fay Guiffo (violin) and Justyna Jablonska (cello), with sound designer Gabriel Kemp.
DPJ’s passion for setting the written word to music, via Kathleen Jamie’s profoundly beautiful poetry, promises to be a delight for audiences.
Kathleen Jamie has said “I’ve listened more than several times now, often late at night, but now again this morning and I have to say I find it truly transporting. I don’t know quite where I’ve been transported but it is not quite of this world, and it’s wonderful.
Lone Tree, that was composed between Winter 2023 and Spring 2024, is supported by Creative Scotland.
A studio recording, songbook and further live performances are set to follow.
