Theatre Company Magnetic North Begins Residency at Fruitmarket’s Warehouse

Later this January, award winning Edinburgh based theatre company, Magnetic North, will premiere their new production We Will Hear the Angels as the first theatre residents of Fruitmarket’s Warehouse. The Company will return in March to restage their critically acclaimed adaptation of Walden in the Warehouse alongside a response by artist Harvey Dimond.

Fruitmarket, Edinburgh is excited to open up their Warehouse to new voices as it hosts this new production from Magnetic North that is inspired by Hitchcock’s classic film Rear Window and the last scene of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya. This new play uses music, text and movement to explore the state of melancholy and the strange power of sad music to uplift us.

Conceived as a piece that is both a live performance and a digital film, it is co-directed by Nicholas Bone and film-maker Marisa Zanotti and features an eclectic mix of music performed live by a cast of five performers: Apphia Campbell, Daniel Padden, Greg Sinclair, Mia Scott and Nicholas Bone.

The Fruitmarket Warehouse opened in July 2021 as part of an expansion and transformation of the existing space, since then it has hosted live music, dance, performance, screenings, club nights, talks and more. Taking its title from a line in Anton Chekhov’s play Uncle Vanya, We Will Hear the Angels interweaves snapshots of five lives inspired by characters from works by Chekhov and Katherine Mansfield and the street musician Moondog. It features an eclectic range of live music from Hank Williams to Johann Sebastian Bach.

Having staged live music, dance, screenings and a host of installations in 2022 we are still discovering the potential of this unique space in Edinburgh’s City Centre. As we welcome theatre audiences in the space for these performances and subsequently the Manipulate Festival in February, we’re excited about the creativity, experimentation and inspiring work that continues to fill the space.”
