Although, like other entertainment venues across the land, Ayr’s Gaiety Theatre remains closed, they are still engaged in supporting their community. Since the start of the Covid crisis in March 2020, they have created more than 20 new films created opportunities for freelance emerging artists, supporting them to create new works. As well as this, they have provided grant funding of over £200,000 to local community organisations offering wellbeing support, essentials, and emergency food supplies.
Their upcoming Spring 2021 Season includes a world-premiere of A Whirl Round The Gaiety – an original film produced with the University of the West of Scotland; Meet Jan Black – a new drama, in association with Glasgow theatre company Wonder Fools, written for The Gaiety by Scottish playwright Johnny McKnight starring Maureen Beattie; a new Schools project There’s an Alien in Ayrshire from Bea Webster; an outdoor family-friendly mystery adventure series with The Secret Society of the Glorious Goat and Write Me In – FREE female-led creative writing workshops in playwriting and writing for television guided by experienced female writers and led by Maryam Hamidi.
