The Gaiety Theatre in Ayr was built in 1902. Since its major refurbishment in 2016 it has created well over 30 jobs, supported up to 100 training places a year as well as offering outreach projects for young people and older people with dementia.
During the Covid pandemic, this centre of the arts in Ayrshire announces a new venture. It comes in the form of the New Scottish Companies Programme to be launched in 2021 and designed to support the development of new theatre companies and artists from Ayrshire and across Scotland.
The Programme is designed to give opportunities to companies who may have had difficulty in the past in accessing help to forward their career in the world of arts and creativity. Their aim is to support four of the most exciting new companies in taking the next steps as artists and organisations.
Robbie Gordon, Creative Engagement Director said “The New Scottish Companies programme is The Gaiety’s attempt to reach out and support Scotland’s freshest and most exciting early career companies. Scotland has such a rich history of theatre companies, and we know that the next 7:84s, Random Accomplices and Catherine Wheels are out there somewhere – this programme is designed to give them a helping hand.”
The initiative includes a six-month attachment to The Gaiety, with mentoring from established practitioners, eight masterclasses with arts experts, present work and/or pitch a show to an invited audience of industry professionals, and a grant of £1000 to use in whichever way would best support the individual artist or company.
Applications require a short written statement of up to 500 words or a 2-3minute audio or video recording saying what you would benefit from being on the New Scottish Companies Programme, along with a CV of work to date including, if applicable, examples of past work such as photos, scripts, videos etc.
All applications, and any questions about the programme or application process, should be submitted by email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Application deadline is midnight on Friday 27th November and interviews will be held on Zoom w/c 14th December 2020.
