Meet the Danes at the Fringe

The 2020 Fringe might be cancelled as we know it, with Edinburgh’s streets empty of culture hungry hordes, but the never say die spirit is very much alive in many places.  With a number of fringe-adjacent digital projects available, the concept of the Fringe is being kept alive till its proposed return in 2021. Among these, is some enterprising work from Denmark.

#DANISH will be presenting two signature #DANISH shows at Edinburgh Festival Fringe that were selected and supported by The Danish Arts Foundation. These shows are Rocky! Return of The Loser and Walk-Man. Rocky! is a provocative, political drama that was well received by audiences and reviewers alike, winning the prestigious Danish Reumert Award the year it was made. The play’s award-winning director Tue Biering from Fix & Foxy, will discuss his drama with two international guests who specialise in theatre and know his work.

Rocky! will be streamed as part of Zoo Venue’s online Edinburgh Fringe performance streaming service, #Zootv.  It will be screened on the 18th August and will then remain on ZOO TV to watch until 28 August.

The second show, Walk-Man,is a dance piece with four performers that uses stunt theatre, poetry and humour. Artistic directors Jannik Elkjær and KristofferLouis Andrup Pedersen from prolific touring Danish dance company DON GNU will be discussing their latest dance piece.

Both signature shows are curated and supported by the Danish Arts Foundation. #DANISH is supported by the Embassy of Denmark in the UK and is produced and developed by Danish production and promotion company WILDTOPIA.

There will also feature shorter pieces that would have been at this year’s Fringe such as the work using human size puppets entitled Dust by Sew Flunk Fury Wit along with the family show The Letter and Jekyll On Ice by Paolo Nani.

During these rapidly changing times, audiences will be given an opportunity for a brief insight into research and considerations regarding economic, environmental, and social sustainability for EdFringe 21 from Danish production company and long term festival producers, WILDTOPIA.

These events are part of a series of online Fringe ExChange industry events for international performing arts professionals created by the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society and running throughout what would have been the festival period of 7th – 31st August 2020,
