Stills Gallery, a centre for photography based in the heart of Edinburgh, presents Stills Salon, an exhibition presenting the work made in the analogue and digital production facilities, showcasing work by local and international photographers, students, alumni of Stills School and by members of Stills staff and volunteers.
Featuring the work of over 80 contributing artists, each piece in the exhibition has been produced in Stills’ state-of-the-art production facilities, in their analogue darkrooms or using our digital scanners and printers.
Neil Harman, Stills Salon contributing artist said “The techniques that I have been using over the last year have been inspired by the John Davies workshop that I attended at Stills last October, so it was great to return to Stills to make the print and I’m thrilled to have the chance to show it at the gallery.”
All Submissions to Stills Salon will be considered for the Stills Salon Award, which will be announced on the evening of the launch on 24th October 2024. This award has three prizes with a first being £200, a second £150 and a third £100 and includes digital Fine Art InkJet printing paper gifted by Hahnemühle.
Stills facilities support a vibrant community of artists, students, and photographers to develop their practices affordably. Several of the works featured in Stills Salon were produced on photography courses offered at Stills, others by alumni of Stills School, that is a free photography school for young people aged 16–25 who face barriers accessing the arts.
Displaying a diverse range of subject matters, skills and production techniques, Stills Salon highlights the importance and value of affordable workshop spaces in developing a lively artistic community in Edinburgh and across Scotland.
Evan Thomas, Stills Technical Manager said “Stills has a longstanding history of supporting local and international photographers in developing their practice. We’re delighted to shine a spotlight on our fantastic production facilities and give our users the opportunity to showcase their work in our gallery.”
Stills is committed to ensuring continued access and opportunity for the practice and study of photography. It is supported by Creative Scotland, City of Edinburgh Council, Project Echo, and The William Grant Foundation and is generously supported in-kind by Hahnemühle and Bellfield Brewery.
All work featured in Stills Salon will be for sale, priced at the artists’ discretion.
Exhibition runs at Stills in Cockburn Street, Edinburgh from 25th October – 30th November 2024.
