Start the New Year with an RSNO Viennese Gala in Haddington, East Lothian

For fans of classical music, New Year is synonymous with Vienna whose famous son Johann Strauss created his iconic waltzes and polkas. This January, at St Mary’s Parish Church in Haddington, the Viennese atmosphere will be revived in a concert celebrating the romance of the period by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) as part of The Brunton’s classical music programme.

The Brunton Theatre Trust is currently unable to programme events into The Brunton theatre in Musselburgh due to RAAC (reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete) issues in the roof. Instead, the Trust is taking events out to alternative venues in Musselburgh and Haddington, to ensure that people of East Lothian and beyond still have access to a high quality arts and entertainment programme.

Formed in 1891 as the Scottish Orchestra, the company became the Scottish National Orchestra in 1950, was awarded Royal Patronage in 1977 and as the RSNO is one of Europe’s leading symphony orchestras. Many renowned conductors have contributed to its success, including Sir John Barbirolli, Walter Susskind, Sir Alexander Gibson, Neeme Järvi, Walter Weller, Alexander Lazarev and Stéphane Denève.

The Orchestra’s artistic team is led by Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård, who was appointed RSNO Music Director in 2018. The RSNO is supported by the Scottish Government and is one of the Scottish National Performing Companies. RSNO performs across Scotland, including concerts in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen, Perth and Inverness, appears regularly at the Edinburgh International Festival and the BBC Proms and has made recent tours to the USA, China and Europe.

The concert’s venue, St Mary’s Parish Church in Haddington, a popular venue for classical music, including concerts during the Lammermuir Festival. is known  for its warm acoustic and spectacular architecture.
