Summerhall Arts Presents FORM: Exhibitions by Contemporary Female Sculptors

Summerhall Arts presents its first set of exhibitions to be held in the galleries of Summerhall arts village with the unveiling of FORM: A season of exhibitions by female contemporary sculptors. It will comprise works by the following five artists:

Mella Shaw at Summerhall War Memorial and Sciennes Galleries

Sounding Line is a large-scale ceramic installation addressing the devastating effect of

marine sonar on whales and other cetaceans. The installation is accompanied by a short film documenting a return journey taking one of the unfired sculptural forms back into the Sea in South Uist, Outer Hebrides.

Yumiko Ono at Summerhall Corner Gallery

Composition is the series of large scalable work Ono started in Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop. The idea was to use the same material to create different shapes, starting from simple shapes and gradually increasing components so that the form becomes more complicated. Composition III is created from the same pieces of material used in Composition I and II.

Camila Ospina Gaitán at Meadows Galleries

An Uncanny Feeling That She Was Being Watched exhibition, showcases Colombian artist Camila Ospina Gaitán’s meticulous years of research and practice. The exhibition not only delves into her unique perspective on gender, culture, and identity but also invites the viewer to trace the evolution of her multiple-format sculptures.

Emma Hislop at Post Mortem Gallery

What is Left Behind unveils the previously unopened to the public Post Mortem Room as a new gallery space, bringing together Emma Hislop’s practice and the history of the room within the Royal Dick Veterinary School. Hislop invites an autopsy of synchronicities. Unpacking imagery from myth and lore surrounding Summerhall and Rosslyn Chapel.

Rowan Walker at Basement Galleries

Foreign Objects investigates our relationship to the concept of pain, and the institution of medicine, both modern and historical. Utilising the clinical aesthetic, the works hope to mimic the perfected nature of the modern medical environment, whilst incorporating corporeal forms and materials associated with the human body. In combining these elements, the body is re-inserted into the clinical as the inextricable relationship between the two is brought to the surface.

Visual Arts and Cinema Curator of Summerhall Arts Samantha Chapman, said “It is with pleasure we announce FORM, the first Visual Arts project to be undertaken by our new charitable organisation Summerhall Arts. This season of exhibitions showcases and celebrates female artists working in the field of sculpture, an historically male dominated sphere. The season is comprised of both local and international artists at varying stages of their careers and presents a diverse range of perspectives and themes. We are delighted to invite you to experience these exhibitions.”
