The latest take on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic story, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, from the joint forces of the National Theatre of Scotland (NTS) and Selkie Productions in association with Screen Scotland and Sky Arts, can now announce the cast for this innovative version.
The co-production involves the use of theatrical and cinematic techniques to create a live filmic and theatrical experience. In a live filmset built in Leith Theatre, audiences will witness the simultaneous creation and screening in this one-off experience.
A cast featuring leading Scottish stage and screen talent has been assembled for this unique project. This includes award winning Scottish actor, Lorn Macdonald, who won the Best Actor Scottish BAFTA for his portrayal of Spanner in the film Beats, takes on the role of Utterson. Dr Jekyll is performed by Scottish actor Henry Pettigrew whose stage roles with NTS productions include Midsummer, Black Watch and Beautiful Burnout.
They are joined in the role of Sir Danvers Carew by well-known Scottish actor and director David Hayman, whose recent film credits includeIn Like Flynn and Our Ladies. Peter Singh, who has a prolific career on stage and screen with recent film roles including Cruella, plays Lanyon. Award-winning Scottish actor, writer and director Alison Peebles plays Poole while weel kent Scottish actor Tam Dean Burn takes on the role of Councillor Begg.
Written by award-winning film maker Hope Dickson Leach and Vlad Butucea, this Jekyll and Hyde, that has been reworked for contemporary audiences, offers the opportunity to experience a film being created around them, gaining insight into the theatre and filmmaking process. Audience members will wear headsets while the drama unfolds live on a large screen in the auditorium.
Live at Leith Theatre will run from 25th to 27th February 2022 at 7pm with Audio described and captioned performances on Friday 25th February and BSL interpreted performance on Sunday 27th February.
Cinema Listings for The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde – Live From Leith Theatre stream will be announced on 28 January.
